France’s Intention to Recognize a Palestinian State
On July 24, 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s intention to formally recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September. This decision, conveyed via social media and a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, underscores France’s “historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.” Macron’s announcement, while largely symbolic for now, marks France as the first Group of Seven nation to declare such a move. It follows increasing frustration in Europe over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and comes amidst a growing international sentiment for a two-state solution. The decision was welcomed by Palestinian officials, including Hamas, but drew strong condemnation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who called it “reckless” and a reward for terrorism.

Extension of President’s Rule in Manipur
President’s Rule in Manipur was extended for another six months by the Indian Parliament on July 25, 2025, effective from August 13, 2025. This extension follows the initial imposition of President’s Rule on February 13, 2025, after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation amidst severe ethnic violence in the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the resolution for the extension in the Rajya Sabha, which was subsequently approved. The ongoing ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, which began in May 2023, has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement, alongside widespread disruption and concerns over law and order. The extension aims to continue efforts towards restoring peace and normalcy, while maintaining administrative stability in the politically volatile northeastern state.

Joe Root Becomes 3rd Highest Run-Scorer in Test Cricket
On July 25, 2025, England’s star batsman Joe Root achieved a significant milestone in Test cricket, becoming the third-highest run-scorer in the format’s history. During the ongoing fourth Test match against India at Old Trafford, Root surpassed the tallies of legendary batsmen Rahul Dravid (13,288 runs) and Jacques Kallis (13,289 runs). Root, with over 13,300 Test runs, continues to cement his legacy as one of the most prolific batsmen of the modern era. His consistency and ability to score runs across different conditions have been a hallmark of his illustrious career, and at 34, he still has considerable time to potentially challenge even higher records.

Union Health Minister on Covid Vaccination and Heart Attack Risk
On July 25, 2025, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda addressed the Lok Sabha, clarifying that Covid vaccination had no effect on the risk of heart attacks. Citing studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Minister stated that extensive research has “conclusively established no linkage” between Covid-19 vaccines and sudden deaths or increased heart attack risk among adults in India.9 He highlighted that factors such as genetic predisposition, underlying health issues, and risky lifestyle choices (e.g., binge drinking, recreational drug use, vigorous physical activity within 48 hours of death) were identified as playing a significant role in unexplained sudden deaths. Nadda’s statement aimed to dispel misinformation and reassure the public about the safety and efficacy of Covid vaccines, which have been crucial in controlling the pandemic.

Outcome of Maldivian President Muizzu and Indian PM Modi’s Meeting
On July 25, 2025, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Malé, marking a significant step in mending and strengthening bilateral ties. The meeting, described as warm and productive, saw President Muizzu express heartfelt gratitude for India’s crucial economic assistance, particularly India’s agreement to ease the Maldives’ debt repayment burden by 40% (reducing annual obligations from $51 million to $29 million). Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a stronger economic and maritime partnership, exchanging eight key agreements covering areas such as debt repayment, fisheries, digital payments (including UPI and RuPay adoption), and a new Line of Credit worth Rs 4,850 crore (approx. USD 550 million) for infrastructure development. The discussions also initiated talks for a Free Trade Agreement. This visit, with PM Modi as the guest of honor for Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, signals a turnaround in relations that had seen friction, re-emphasizing India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and its role as a first responder for the island nation.
