Directorate of Culture, Uttar Pradesh, Invites Applications for Prestigious Award, Begum Akhtar Puraskar in 2025-26
The Directorate of Culture Uttar Pradesh, has officially announced the “Begum Akhtar Puraskar” for the year 2025-26. The award, aimed at recognizing exceptional musical talent, invites applications from eligible artists. This initiative seeks to honor singers who have made significant contributions to the genres of Dadra, Thumri, and Ghazal, and have achieved national acclaim through their personal efforts.
Award Details and Eligibility Criteria
The “Begum Akhtar Puraskar” comes with a significant prize of ₹5.00 Lakhs (Rupees Five Lakhs Only). To be considered for this prestigious honor, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Residence: The artist must either be a native of Uttar Pradesh or have their main place of work (Karmbhoomi) in the state.
- Age: The artist’s age must not be less than 40 years.
- Achievement: The artist’s long-term dedication and outstanding accomplishments must have earned them national recognition based on undeniable standards.
- Scope of Recognition: The award is given to acknowledge the artist’s overall achievements in the field of singing, not for any single specific composition.
Application Process and Important Dates
Interested artists must submit their application forms by the deadline of 5:00 PM on October 25, 2025. The application forms, along with the detailed rules and regulations, can be downloaded from the official website of the Department of Culture, Uttar Pradesh at http://upculture.up.nic.in.1
Completed applications must be submitted in person at the office of the Director, Directorate of Culture, Uttar Pradesh, located at Jawahar Bhawan, Navam Tal, Lucknow-226001. The application process commenced on September 11, 2025.

The “Begum Akhtar Puraskar” is a tribute to the legacy of Begum Akhtar, often called the “Mallika-e-Ghazal” (Queen of Ghazal). It aims to promote and preserve the rich heritage of classical and semi-classical music.
