Supreme Court Upholds E20 Petrol Rollout

The Supreme Court of India on September 2, 2025, dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that challenged the nationwide rollout of 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20). The plea, filed by an advocate, argued that the mandated sale of E20 fuel was detrimental to vehicles not designed to handle a high ethanol blend, particularly those manufactured before April 2023. The petition also claimed that motorists were left with no choice but to use a fuel that could lead to engine corrosion, loss of fuel efficiency, and higher repair costs, with insurance companies often rejecting claims for ethanol-related damage. The government defended the policy, highlighting its national interest benefits, such as supporting sugarcane farmers and reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuel imports. While dismissing the plea, the court reportedly gave a directive for greater consumer awareness, emphasizing the need to inform customers about their vehicle’s compatibility with E20 fuel at the point of sale.

Educate Girls Wins Ramon Magsaysay Award

On September 2, 2025, the Indian non-profit organization Educate Girls (Foundation to Educate Girls Globally) was announced as a recipient of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award. This marks a historic achievement as it is the first Indian organization to receive the award, often considered Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize. The organization, founded in 2007 by Safeena Husain, was recognized for its transformative work in addressing gender disparity in education. Its efforts have focused on identifying and enrolling out-of-school girls from remote, tribal, and disadvantaged rural areas and ensuring they complete their education. Educate Girls has successfully leveraged community engagement and partnerships with local governments to bring over 2 million girls back to school. The award citation praised the organization for liberating girls from the “bondage of illiteracy” and empowering them with the “courage and agency to achieve their full human potential.”

    Devastating Earthquake in Afghanistan

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on September 2, 2025, causing widespread devastation and resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. The seismic event, which had its epicenter near the city of Jalalabad, affected the provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar, and Laghman. The shallow quake led to the collapse of homes and other structures, burying people under the rubble. Rescue efforts were immediately launched, but were severely hampered by the region’s mountainous terrain, with roads blocked by landslides and debris. Humanitarian organizations, already on the ground, faced the daunting task of reaching remote communities that were cut off from aid. The disaster compounded an already dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, which is facing economic hardship and a severe shortage of international funding. The United Nations and other international agencies have voiced support to assist in relief operations.

    Assassination of Andriy Parubiy

Andriy Parubiy, a prominent Ukrainian politician and former speaker of the country’s parliament, was assassinated on August 30, 2025, in the western city of Lviv. The killing, which was widely condemned by Ukrainian and international leaders, was confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to initial police reports, an unknown gunman, disguised as a food delivery worker, shot Parubiy multiple times. The assassination was reportedly a “carefully planned operation” and investigators are probing a possible “Russian trace.” A suspect was arrested within 36 hours of the incident. During his arraignment, the suspect reportedly confessed to the murder, claiming it was an act of “personal revenge on the Ukrainian authorities” for the death of his son who had fought on the front lines against Russian forces. The incident has been viewed as a significant loss for Ukraine’s political community and has underscored the ongoing tensions and security risks within the country.
