Overview
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced faculty positions for Indian Nationals and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) at the levels of Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor. The university encourages applications from candidates with strong academic records, teaching/research experience, and interdisciplinary research interests.1

Eligibility Criteria
General Qualifications
Essential qualifications and pay levels are as per UGC Regulations, 2018. A minimum of 55% marks at the Master’s level is an essential qualification for direct recruitment. A relaxation of 5% in marks is allowed for SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy Layer)/Differently abled categories at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Ph.D. degree holders who obtained their Master’s Degree prior to September 19, 1991, will receive a 5% relaxation (from 55% to 50% of the marks).
Professor
- Scale of Pay: Academic Pay Level-14 (Rs. 1,44,200 – 2,18,200)
- Essential Qualifications:
- An eminent scholar with a Ph.D. degree in the concerned/allied/relevant discipline.
- Actively engaged in research with evidence of published work, including a minimum of 10 research publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals.
- Total research score of 120 as per Appendix II, Table 2, of UGC Regulations, 2018.
- A minimum of ten years of teaching experience in university/college as Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor, and/or research experience at equivalent level at University/National Level Institutions with evidence of successfully guided doctoral candidates.
- Alternatively, an outstanding professional with a Ph.D. degree in relevant/allied/applied disciplines from academic institutions/industry, who has made significant contributions to knowledge, supported by documentary evidence, with ten years’ experience.
Associate Professor
- Scale of Pay: Academic Pay Level-13A (Rs. 1,31,400 – 2,17,100)
- Essential Qualifications:
- A good academic record with a Ph.D. Degree in the concerned/allied/relevant disciplines.
- A Master’s Degree with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade).
- A minimum of eight years of teaching and/or research experience in an academic/research position equivalent to that of Assistant Professor in a University, College, or Accredited Research Institution/industry.
- A minimum of seven publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals.
- A total research score of 75 as per Appendix II, Table 2, of UGC Regulations, 2018.
Assistant Professor
- Scale of Pay: Academic Pay Level-10 (Rs. 57,700 – 1,82,400)
- Essential Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) in a concerned/relevant/allied subject from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
- Must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC or the CSIR, or a similar test accredited by the UGC (like SLET/SET).
- Candidates who have been awarded a Ph.D. Degree in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016, and their amendments, are exempted from NET/SLET/SET.
- Ph.D. candidates registered prior to July 11, 2009, are exempted from NET/SLET/SET if their Ph.D. degree was awarded in a regular mode, evaluated by at least two external examiners, had an open viva voce, and published two research papers from their Ph.D. work (at least one in a refereed journal), and presented at least two papers based on their Ph.D. work in sponsored conferences/seminars. This must be certified by the Registrar or Dean (Academic Affairs) of the concerned University.
- NET/SLET/SET is not required for Master’s Programmes in disciplines where these tests are not conducted.
- A Ph.D. degree obtained from a foreign university/institution with a ranking among the top 500 in the World University Ranking (at any time) by QS, THE, or ARWU of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Specializations and Desirable Qualifications (Examples)
- SCHOOL OF ARTS & AESTHETICS (SAA)
- Associate Professor (OBC Backlog): Specialization in Art History with focus on Pre-modern medieval Indian painting traditions or contemporary art theory with focus on modern art history and new media culture. Ph.D. or D. Phil. Degree in Art History.
- Professor (PwD#): Ph.D. in Cinema Studies/Film Studies with minimum ten years of teaching and research experience. Publications can include authored monograph on film, and articles/chapters in reputed Cinema/Film Studies journals/edited volumes.
- SCHOOL OF BIOTECHNOLOGY (SBT)
- Associate Professor (PwD#): Nanobiotechnology/Nanotechnology.
- Professor (UR): Chemical Biology/Synthetic biology/Plant Biotechnology/Environmental Biotechnology.
- SCHOOL OF COMPUTATIONAL AND INTEGRATIVE SCIENCES (SCIS)
- Associate Professor (UR): Ph.D. in any area of Natural Sciences with specialization in Structural Bioinformatics, Chemoinformatics. Desirable: Demonstrated capabilities and experience in teaching and at least 7 high-quality peer-reviewed original research publications (not review papers) as first or corresponding author in the past 8 years.
- SCHOOL OF COMPUTER AND SYSTEMS SCIENCES (SCSS)
- Assistant Professor (PwD#): Specialization in Databases, Software Engineering, Computer Networks, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Information Security, Theoretical Computer Science, Machine Learning, Operational Research, Optimization, Image Processing, Information Theory, VLSI design, Embedded Systems, MEMS, Computer Graphics, Image Processing, Computer Vision, Modeling and Simulation, Natural Language Processing, Wireless Communication, Algorithms, Multimedia.
- Associate Professor (OBC): Specialization in areas similar to Assistant Professor, with desirable qualifications of a minimum of seven publications in journals indexed in SCI/SCIE/SCOPUS and evidence of guidance of one Ph.D..
- SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING (SOE)
- Assistant Professor (OBC): B.Tech./B.E. and M.Tech./M.E. in Electronics/Electronics and Communication Engineering. Desirable: Ph.D. in the same areas.
- Professor (UR): M.Tech./M.E. and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering and related areas.
- SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (SSS)
- Associate Professor (OBC Backlog): Modern Indian History with specialization in Economic History/Indian Ocean Studies/Maritime History.
- Professor (UR) (Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health): Bachelor’s degree in medicine (MBBS)/dentistry/AYUSH/veterinary medicine/nursing, valid registration, Master’s degree in public health/community medicine/social and preventive medicine/community health nursing, and Ph.D. degree.

- Documents to Upload: Photograph, scanned copies of all certificates, marksheets, evidence of teaching, research, NOC from employer, Master, M.Phil, Ph.D, NET certificates, copies of reprints of published articles, certificate containing the record of date of birth, caste certificate, etc..
- Incomplete applications: Summarily rejected without correspondence.
- Separate Application: A separate online application form must be filled for each post.
- Government/Autonomous/PSU Service: Candidates already in such service should submit a scanned copy of the forwarding of application through proper channel. Failure to do so may result in not counting past service/pay protection.
- Plagiarism Undertaking: Candidates must provide an undertaking stating their publications are free from plagiarism.
Selection Process
- The academic score (as specified in Appendix II, Table 3A of UGC Regulations, 2018) will be considered only for short-listing candidates for the interview.
- Selections will be based solely on performance in the interview.
- The University reserves the right to conduct interviews through Online, Offline, or both modes.
- The University may restrict the number of candidates called for an interview based on qualifications/experience higher than the minimum prescribed, especially if the number of applications is large.
- Only SMS/Email will be sent for calling shortlisted candidates for interview.
Important Dates
- Online Application Submission Period: From July 07, 2025 (03:00 PM) to August 05, 2025 (05:00 PM).
- Eligibility Determination Date: The eligibility of candidates will be determined based on qualifications/experience/publications acquired up to the last date fixed for receipt of online applications.

- General, OBC, EWS Category: ₹2000/- (Non-Refundable).
- SC/ST/PwD and Women Candidates: No application fee.
Important Notes
- The University reserves the right not to fill up any of the advertised positions.
- Qualifications and other conditions are subject to UGC regulations 2018 and subsequent amendments.
- Time taken for M.Phil. and/or Ph.D. degrees will not be considered as teaching/research experience for appointment, unless active service spent pursuing a Research Degree simultaneously with teaching assignment without taking leave.
- Relaxation in educational qualifications, experience, age, etc., for reserved category candidates will be permissible as per UGC/Government of India rules.
- Caste certificates for SC/ST and OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates must be in the format prescribed by the Government of India.
- PwD candidates must submit a Disability Certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format.
- EWS reservation benefits require production of an Income and Asset Certificate as per DoPT OM No. 36039/1/2019-Estt. (Res.) dated January 31, 2019.
