Maratha Military Landscapes: India’s 44th UNESCO World Heritage Site
In a significant cultural and historical recognition, the ‘Maratha Military Landscapes of India’ were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 11, 2025, during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris. This addition marks India’s 44th UNESCO World Heritage Site. The nomination, initially for the 2024-25 cycle, is a serial property consisting of 12 forts: eleven in Maharashtra (Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg) and one, Gingee Fort, in Tamil Nadu. These forts, built between the 17th and 19th centuries, exemplify the unique military planning and innovative fort architecture developed by the Maratha rulers. They highlight the strategic use of diverse geographical terrains—hills, coastlines, forests, and islands—to create a robust defensive network. The inscription acknowledges their Outstanding Universal Value, particularly their adaptation to terrain and integrated military design, a diplomatic triumph for India after initial deferral recommendations. This recognition is expected to boost heritage tourism and conservation efforts, bringing global attention to the Maratha legacy of resistance and statecraft.1 2

India’s Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL)
India achieved a significant global milestone on July 12, 2025, by launching the world’s first Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL). This pioneering digital platform aims to preserve and protect India’s rich traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy, from misuse and misappropriation. Utilizing advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, TKDL organizes and makes accessible ancient texts and practices, allowing for easier application in modern healthcare and supporting scientific research. The World Health Organization (WHO) lauded India’s initiative, acknowledging it as a crucial step for global healthcare innovation and a model for integrating AI with traditional medicine. The TKDL will help in identifying drug action pathways, conducting comparative studies across different traditional systems, and preventing biopiracy. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to leveraging technology for the responsible use and advancement of its indigenous medical heritage, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “AI for all.” 7 8
Indian Railways’ Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS)
Indian Railways, in collaboration with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), is installing the Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS) to revolutionize train maintenance and safety. The primary objective of MVIS is to inspect trains in real-time using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies. Deployed wayside, this cutting-edge system captures high-resolution images of the under-gear of moving trains, automatically detecting any anomalies such as hanging, loose, or missing components, as well as hairline cracks and wear and tear. Upon detection, MVIS generates real-time alerts, enabling prompt response and preventive action. This automated system significantly reduces reliance on manual inspections, minimizing human error, enhancing operational efficiency, and preventing potential breakdowns, delays, and accidents. MVIS aligns with Indian Railways’ broader goal of integrating modern, intelligent systems into its infrastructure, ensuring a safer, smarter, and more reliable future for rail travel.9 10
