Indian Maritime University (IMU) : Company / Organisation Profile 3
The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University headquartered in Chennai, India. It was established in 2008 through an Act of Parliament, the Indian Maritime University Act 2008. The university is dedicated to providing education and training in various areas of maritime studies, including navigation, marine engineering, maritime law, and marine management.
The legacy of IMU’s Navi Mumbai campus can be traced back to 1927, when nautical training was initiated on the Training Ship Dufferin. Following the decommissioning of Dufferin, the training of cadets continued on the TS Rajendra from 1972. In 1993, the maritime training institute moved to a shore-based academy called TS Chanakya, where the scope of education was broadened to include personality development along with technical training. Eventually, TS Chanakya was merged with IMU to become the Navi Mumbai Campus of the university.
The formation of the Mumbai Campus of IMU involved the amalgamation of two renowned institutes – Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Advanced Maritime Studies (LBS CAMSAR) and Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI). LBS CAMSAR was established in 1948 and provided various post-sea training courses to the personnel of the merchant navy. In 1949, the Govt. of India established the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), which had two institutes situated in Mumbai and Kolkata. Later, the DMET in Mumbai was renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in 1995.
To establish the Kolkata Campus of IMU, two legacy institutes, Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) and Indian Institute of Port Management (IIPM), were combined. In 1949, the Govt. of India created the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), which had two institutes situated in Mumbai and Kolkata. The DMET in Kolkata was later renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in 1995.
The Chennai campus has a history dating back to 1984 when the National Institute of Port Management (NIPM) was established by the Government of India as an independent body. The NIPM provided professional training courses to individuals working in the ports sector with technical assistance from UNDP/UNCTAD. In 2006, the institute was rebranded as the National Maritime Academy (NMA) with an expanded role to train professionals from all sectors of the maritime industry, including ports. Finally, in 2008, the NMA was merged with the Indian Maritime University (IMU) to become the Chennai Campus of IMU.
